Beauty 101: What is a primer? Everything you need to know.

best primer

Believe or not but a lot of people skip the primer and apply makeup after they moisturize. And yes some moisturizers “technically” could be used as primer but let me put it to you this way, would you rather look “ok” or your ABSOLUTE BEST? That’s what I thought. Well listen up. I’m here to tell you to never-skip-the-primer! Just as I’ve preached before how moisturizer is essential, well this is as important. For those of you who don’t know what a primer is or what it does, here’s the scoop.

Makeup primer is a base for foundation or makeup that allows it to go on smoother and last longer. Buuuut, did you know you can also use a primer on it’s own? It’s true! For example, when I’m going out to run errands and don’t want to wear any makeup but want my skin to look smoother and even, I apply primer after my SPF and it makes a world of difference! My skin looks smoother, with even skin tone and it reduces my pores. It truly is heaven sent.

It’s important to know your skin and decide which primer is best for you. It’s not a one size fits all (well, the majority of them). Depending what issues you have with your skin, either dryness, oiliness or prone to acne, there is a product for you out there. Here is my list of worthy primers, from least expensive to the most lavish.

♦◊ MAYBELLINE Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser $6.99

If you have oily skin and don’t want to break the bank then this baby can do wonders. Not only does this primer minimize the appearance of pores but it also leaves your skin with a matte finish and at the same time moisturizes your skin. If that doesn’t convince you enough, then the price tag will. Highly recommend ♥

♦◊ L’ORÉAL Paris Magic Perfecting Base $10.99

Winner of Allure Best of Beauty, this lightweight primer glides on like silk while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as reducing the appearance of pores. This is suitable for all skin types and gives your skin a flawless matte finish. Plus, if you don’t like white primers then you’ll love how easily blendable this tone is.

♦◊ PETER THOMAS ROTH Skin To Die For $28

Peter Thomas Roth can do no wrong. Every single product I’ve tried from him I love. This primer is uh-mazing! This is what I used every single day, with or without makeup for almost a year! I swear. This primer does what it says it does and more. It diffuses your face, drastically reducing the appearance of fine lines, pores and evens skin tone, plus it has disa-pore 20 which treats your skin and helps reduce the appearance of pore size and shape overtime.  This mattifying primer will change your life.

♦◊ SMASHBOX Photo Finish Reduce Redness Primer $39

If you suffer from Rosacea or want to reduce any redness whether it be from acne or skin irritation, then this primer is the best one out there. There was a phase where I would break out a lot on my forehead and has a lot of scars left on my face and this primer came to my rescue. This color correcting, green tone face primer helps reduce redness, evens out skin tone, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and blurs pores. This baby does it all!

♦◊ MARC JACOBS Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer $44

One of my all time favorite primers ♥ This primer is infused with coconut extracts to help nourish and form a natural, vitamin rich barrier between your skin and your makeup while allowing your skin to breathe. This refreshing and hydrating primer is ideal for people with normal to dry skin. Great to use during the Winter if you’re prone to dry patches on your face. Plus the smell of this product is so phenomenal!

♦◊ TATCHA The Silk Canvas $52

If you’re wanting more from your primer, then look no further than the Tatcha Silk Canvas. Not only does this primer help reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores (and it does oh so beautifully), but it actually contains anti aging elements inside it. So think of it as having skincare inside a primer. Can’t hurt right? This hydrating primer does come in a balm form and contains 3 different kinds of pressed silk, which actually mimics the skin very well and creates a perfect base for your makeup. It’s great for all skin types and believe me, it’s worth the hype.

♦◊ SISLEY PARIS Double Tenseur Moisturizing Gel $192

Things are getting pricey here but believe me, this one is worth mentioning. If you’re wanting a face lift in a jar then this product is for you. This moisturizing, gel based formula creates an instant firm and lifted appearance to your skin while in the long run helps strengthen the skin firming capacity in just 4 weeks. Plus, it’s great for all skin types. I definitely recommend this one for anyone who has tired looking skin or are in their 30’s and want to take it up a notch.

♦◊ LA MER The Perfecting Treatment $245

This primer is truly perfection in a jar. I have never loved a primer as much as I love this one. This one is for my Queens, my premier signature members, my crème de la crème fancy AF peeps. This silky smooth texture helps reduce redness, dull surface cells, energizes the skin and lifts the look of discoloration. In other words, it’s gonna make your face look like porcelain gurl! This primer is more on the dewy side but the glow you get from this product is heeeeeavenly. Want to glow and look like an Angel? This is the one. ♥

Remember that everyone has different skin types and primers vary depending on what look you’re going for. It’s important to know your skin type and what you’re trying to achieve with a primer. If ever in doubt, you can leave me a message below and I’ll be more than happy to help!
